A Malaysian identity card
All Malaysian citizens and permanent residents are required to have a Malaysian Identity Card (Malaysian id card), sometimes known as a “IC,” which is a government- issued identity card. The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs is responsible for issuing the Malaysian id card(Immigration Division). The National Registration Identity Card (NRIC), which had been in use since 1963, was replaced by it in 1983. Since the NRIC was too simple to fake or replicate, the present IC was put in its stead.
The IC is made up of two parts: the front side has the holder’s name, gender, date of birth, nationality, race, religion, marital status, occupation, residential address, contact information, and photo; the back side has biometric information like a fingerprint, iris scan, palm print, and facial recognition.
The History of Malaysian ID Cards
In 1963, the Government of Malaysia established the National Registration Identity Card (abbreviated as NRIC) system. This was done to make it easier for people to sign up for the national population register. To control the issuing of NRICs, the National Registration Act was created in 1978. This statute did not, however, make any design requirements for the NRIC. As a result, there were several distinct NRIC designs issued at that time.
On January 1, 1983, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced its decision to introduce an official Malaysian id card called the “National Registration Identity Card” (abbreviated NRIC). The NRIC would have the same design as the NRIC but with additional security features. The new identity card was expected to be more difficult to counterfeit than the NRIC. The NRIC was discontinued on December 31, 1988.
Applications on MyKad
The Malaysian government recently launched a mobile application. This app allows Malaysian citizens to verify their identity by scanning their fingerprint, facial recognition, iris scan, voice print, or hand geometry.
The app is free and available on both Android and iOS devices. Malaysian citizens can use it to register themselves for a myKad account, update personal information, view their bank accounts, apply for loans, make payments, check their insurance policy status, renew driving licenses, pay utility bills, buy train tickets, and access public transport services.
Users can also download the app to their smartphones and tablets to authenticate themselves while travelling outside Malaysia.
